Bishop Mcdevitt High School attracts a large number of students with academic and disciplinary concerns. Fewer students attending Archdiocese schools have forced the Archdiocese to mandate this school to retain problematic students at the expense of others. Administrators, spend a disproportionate amount of time with concern for the academic or discipline concerns. An average student, can often feel forgotten about. The school's previous president wanted to be friends with the students and wouldn't give out any serious consequences. Because of his lack of leadership there was a mass leaving of teachers. But despite the shortcomings, the school has many good attributes, Their wrestling team and robotics program have both gotten regional recognition. The size of the school is nice for students who want to personally know each of their teachers. Whether this will allow the school to be sustainable long term is still not known. Also, the tuition mentioned in other reviews is not a McDevitt issue, but rather an Archdiocesan policy.
This is a fantastic school for my children. The performance of the current administration, led by Dr. Powell and Ms. Rooney, really outperforms the previous administration. Many beneficial changes have occurred, which is encouraging given my elder child's experience of "keeping everything the same way we did in 1980." I'm delighted to see that some of the elderly teachers have retired and that new, energetic teachers have joined the team. The sports teams are suddenly winning, and there is a new spirit about the building, as seen by the recent Royal Masque display. I sincerely hope it's allowed to continue!
