This school is inadequate. With 4-year old kids and ESL students all over the place, this school is maybe a notch below public school. They have small classrooms without a teacher's aid at all. Also, if you have tons of foreign-speaking students who don't understand English, it's really as bad as a 30 student classroom. No one gets kicked out even if you insult the teacher! INSANE.
After a disastrous kindergarten year at a highly rated LAUSD school with three different teachers in five months, we looked for an alternative where we felt our concerns, if we had any, would be heard. We found Woodcrest School a wonderful educational home for our son. He hated going to kindergarten, but never once complained about going here. In fact, he refused to even consider any other middle school option other than this school.
My son has been at Woodcrest School for two years. It's a small community with a lot of support. Hopefully, he will stay here until eighth grade. Overall, we're very delighted.
We feel very fortunate to have discovered this school. Our son has been a student here from kindergarten and is currently in fourth grade. We plan to stay at this school for as long as possible and were super excited to discover they're launching a middle school program. The class sizes here are small which allows for individualized attention. Over the years, we've seen class sizes ranging from 12 to 16 students. Every year, we are amazed by the talent, understanding, and dedication of the teachers. Even though our son isn’t big on reading, his teachers somehow manage to motivate him to not give up on it. Also, the parent-teacher meetings are important and detailed. The staff take their time to ensure parents understand their child’s academic progress and areas for growth. Moreover, this school comprises of a community of dedicated staff, teachers, and parents that heartily welcomes everyone and places a high value on quality learning.
I have two children in Woodcrest School, one in elementary and the other in middle school. Classes are small, which is a good thing. The maximum number of students per class is twenty, although my children have never had so many in a class. This school emphasizes using technology in the classroom, including iPads and laptops. Also, the teachers in primary and middle schools know the students. They are very accessible to children and parents. The same can be said about the administration. In addition, the elementary school includes as part of the core curriculum specialty classes each week: science with a laboratory, computers, music, dance, art, and Spanish, each with dedicated teachers in their own classrooms. The children also enjoy several excursions a year. The fourth and fifth graders attend a sleep-away science camp for three nights, which they love. The middle school is small but thriving as well. Because of this, students in grades six and eight interact with each other daily, even in elective classes that change quarterly but include cartography, cooking, video production, newspaper or journalism, and robotics. The robotics team has just taken 16th place in the Vex Robotics competition with 40 teams, of which only 4 are middle schools and the other 36 are high schools. So, if you're looking for an exceptional education for your child where they're part of a community and there's no tolerance for bullying, I strongly encourage you to take a look at what this school has to offer.
I wouldn't advise choosing this school. You should consider finding a decent monastery school as an alternative. The tuition here is significantly more expensive compared to other educational institutions but does not justify the cost. Also, the director acts offensively and can oftentimes be stereotypical and judgmental. Instead of responding with a smile, you will unfortunately experience her constantly having a dismissive attitude.
